The fire NOC (No Objection Certificate) issued by state fire departments to factories and commercial buildings typically includes conditions related to safety signage. These commonly include requirements to display fire exit route maps at each floor or zone, mount “Exit” signs above all emergency exits (with luminescent or illuminated versions in areas prone to power failure), post fire extinguisher location indicators in all areas, and display fire emergency contact numbers prominently.
National Building Code 2016 Requirements
The NBC 2016 specifies requirements for emergency exit signage including the use of photoluminescent (glow-in-the-dark) exit signs that remain visible for a defined period after a power failure. For factories with night shifts or areas with large numbers of workers, these luminescent requirements are particularly important.
Practical Fire Safety Display Checklist
A fire safety display checklist for an Indian factory should confirm that fire exit route maps are displayed at each production area and floor, that illuminated or luminescent exit signs are at all emergency exits, that fire extinguisher location signs are mounted above each extinguisher, that a no-smoking sign is at each applicable zone entry, that fire emergency contact numbers are at the security gate, main canteen, and production areas, and that fire assembly point location is signposted from all areas.
