Safety Display Requirements for Glass Manufacturing Plants — India

safety-display-requirements-glass-manufacturing-plants-india

India’s glass manufacturing sector — flat glass, container glass, specialty glass, and glass fibre — operates facilities with extreme temperature hazards from melting furnaces, mechanical hazards from glass handling and cutting, chemical hazards from raw material processing, and dust hazards from batch plant operations.

High-Temperature Hazard Communication

Glass melting furnaces operate at 1400 to 1600°C. The thermal radiation and molten glass splash hazard in furnace areas requires specific PPE — heat-resistant clothing, face shields, and appropriate footwear — and clear safety communication at furnace area entries. Safety posters covering heat stress prevention, hydration requirements in high-temperature environments, and first aid for burns are important worker health communications in hot end areas.

Broken Glass Hazard

Broken glass is an ever-present hazard across the glass manufacturing process. Safety posters covering correct PPE for glass handling — cut-resistant gloves, safety footwear — correct procedure for broken glass disposal (never by hand, use brush and dustpan, specific disposal containers), and prohibition on glass handling without PPE are important practical safety communications.

Batch Plant Chemical Safety

Glass batch plants handle raw materials including silica sand, soda ash, limestone, and specialty oxides. Silica dust from batch handling is a silicosis hazard. Soda ash and other alkaline materials cause skin and eye irritation. Safety posters in batch plant areas should cover dust control and respiratory protection, PPE requirements for each material, and emergency response for chemical contact.

Float Glass Line Safety

Float glass lines involve the hazardous combination of tin bath operations — molten tin under controlled atmosphere — and high-temperature glass handling. Specific safety communication for tin bath operations, hydrogen gas hazards in the bath atmosphere, and high-temperature glass handling procedures are required in these specialised areas.
