Fire escape and emergency exit signage is among the most regulated and most inspected aspects of safety communication in Indian industrial and commercial facilities. Multiple regulations — the Factories Act 1948, the National Building Code 2016, state fire safety acts, and fire NOC conditions — overlap to create a comprehensive set of requirements. Getting emergency exit signage right is non-negotiable: in a fire, people follow the signs they can see.
The Basic Rules for Emergency Exit Signs in India
Emergency exit signs must be positioned above every emergency exit door, at every decision point in an escape route where direction must be made clear, at the entrance to every stairwell that forms part of an escape route, and at regular intervals along long corridors. Signs must be visible from a specified distance — typically the entire length of the corridor or area where they are placed.
Illumination Requirements
The National Building Code 2016 and fire NOC conditions in most Indian states require that emergency exit signs be internally illuminated or externally illuminated with reliable power, combined with photoluminescent backup that remains visible for a minimum period after power failure. The backup duration requirement varies by state and building type but is typically 60 minutes minimum for industrial and commercial buildings.
Exit Route Maps
In addition to exit direction signs, fire evacuation route maps must be displayed in each area or zone of a factory or multi-floor building. These maps show the current location, all exit routes from that location, the assembly point location, and fire extinguisher and hose reel locations in the area. Route maps must be updated whenever the building layout changes.
Common Deficiencies Found in Factory Exit Sign Audits
Common deficiencies include emergency exit signs not illuminated or photoluminescent backup exhausted, exit signs obscured by materials or equipment stored in front of them, exit doors locked or obstructed — which is a fire NOC violation and a life safety issue — and route maps that have not been updated after facility changes.
