IS 9457:1980 is the Bureau of Indian Standards specification for safety colours and safety signs used in industrial and commercial premises in India. Understanding this standard is essential for EHS professionals who select, design, or approve safety posters and signs for their facilities.
The IS 9457 Safety Colour System
IS 9457 defines five safety colours with specific meanings. Red signifies danger, stop, and prohibition — used for fire equipment, emergency stop controls, and prohibition signs. Yellow signifies caution and possible hazard — used for warning signs, chemical hazard communication, and areas requiring extra care. Green signifies safety, first aid, and go — used for emergency exit signs, first aid locations, and safe condition indicators. Blue signifies mandatory action — used for PPE requirement signs, must-do instructions, and information signs of a directive nature. White and black are used for directional information and general notices.
Types of Safety Signs Under IS 9457
IS 9457 categorises safety signs into four types aligned with these colours. Prohibition signs are circular with a red border and diagonal cross on a white background. Warning signs are triangular with a yellow background and black border. Mandatory signs are circular with a blue background. Emergency information signs are square or rectangular with a green background.
How IS 9457 Relates to Your Safety Posters
When procuring or designing safety posters for Indian factories, the colour coding and sign format should align with IS 9457. A fire safety poster should use red. A PPE requirement poster at a machine should use the mandatory blue with appropriate pictogram. A caution poster near a chemical storage area should use yellow. Consistent IS 9457 colour coding across all your safety communication means workers build an automatic colour-response association — red means danger, blue means must-do — that increases safety behaviour reliability.
IS 9457 and ISO 7010
ISO 7010 is the international standard for safety signs, widely used in multinational manufacturing facilities in India. IS 9457 and ISO 7010 are broadly aligned in their colour system but differ in some pictogram conventions. For multinational-linked facilities that reference both standards, using IS 9457 colour coding with ISO 7010-style pictograms is generally accepted practice.
