What is Lockout Tagout and Why is it Critical in India?
Lockout tagout is the procedure for isolating all energy sources to a machine or equipment before maintenance, cleaning, or adjustment work is performed. Energy sources include electrical power, compressed air, hydraulic pressure, pneumatic systems, stored mechanical energy (springs, suspended parts), and chemical or thermal energy. All must be isolated and verified zero-energy before work begins.
In India, LOTO culture is still developing in many small and medium enterprises. Large multinationals and PSUs typically have formal LOTO programmes, but a significant proportion of the serious accidents involving maintenance workers in Indian factories occur in facilities where LOTO is understood as a concept but not consistently practised.
Essential LOTO Poster Messages
LOTO posters for Indian factories should communicate that all energy must be isolated before maintenance begins, using a clear step-by-step sequence. The golden rule — do not remove another person’s lock or tag — must be prominently displayed. Machine-specific LOTO procedures showing each energy source and its isolation point are the most operationally useful format. Do Not Operate tags and their meaning — this machine is isolated and must not be started — should be explained visually.
Combining LOTO with Permit to Work
Many Indian factories operate a permit to work system for high-risk maintenance activities including LOTO.
