The National Building Code of India (NBC) 2016, published by the Bureau of Indian Standards, is the comprehensive model code providing guidelines for regulating building construction activities. Part 4 of the NBC covers fire and life safety, including specific requirements for fire safety signage in buildings. While the NBC is a model code adopted by state governments, its provisions are widely referenced in fire NOC conditions and building plan approvals across India.
NBC 2016 Exit Signage Requirements
The NBC 2016 specifies that all exit signs in buildings shall be illuminated continuously with adequate brightness at all times. For areas where the normal illumination may fail, photoluminescent (glow-in-the-dark) exit signs are required — these must remain visible for a minimum duration after power failure. Exit signs must be placed above or adjacent to every emergency exit door, at every corridor intersection where the exit direction may not be obvious, and at stairwell entries that lead to exit routes.
Fire Fighting Equipment Identification
NBC 2016 requires that fire fighting equipment — extinguishers, hose reels, hydrant outlets, sprinkler control valves — be clearly identified with standardised signs using red background as the fire equipment colour per IS 9457. Equipment identification signs must be visible from a specified distance and must not be obstructed by materials or equipment at any time.
Assembly Point Signs
NBC 2016 requires that designated assembly points outside buildings be identified with standardised green assembly point signs, visible from the building exits. For large industrial and commercial complexes, multiple assembly points with directional signs from different parts of the facility are required.
Compliance in Industrial Buildings
Industrial buildings including factories, warehouses, and processing facilities are covered by NBC 2016 provisions where adopted by the state building regulations. In practice, fire NOC applications for industrial buildings in most Indian states are assessed against NBC 2016 standards, making NBC-compliant fire safety signage a practical requirement for any new construction or major renovation.
