India’s cold storage sector serves the country’s massive food processing, pharmaceutical, and agricultural industries. Cold storage facilities using ammonia refrigeration systems — the most common refrigerant in large Indian cold storage — present specific life-safety hazards including toxic gas release, flammability in certain concentration ranges, and confined space hazards in vessels and chambers.
Ammonia Refrigeration Safety Communication
Ammonia (NH3) is an effective refrigerant but highly toxic. Exposure at high concentrations can be fatal. Safety communication in facilities using ammonia refrigeration must cover ammonia hazard identification and properties, including the distinctive smell that provides early warning; PPE requirements for plant room access and maintenance — full face respirator or SCBA for potential ammonia releases; emergency response to ammonia release including evacuation procedures and assembly point; location and use of emergency shower and eye wash for ammonia contact; and emergency contact numbers for the fire brigade and medical services.
Cold Chamber Entry Safety
Entry into cold storage chambers presents hazards of hypothermia, slip and fall on ice, and becoming trapped inside. Safety posters at every cold chamber entry should cover minimum PPE for cold chamber entry — insulated clothing, gloves, boots; never enter a cold chamber alone without informing another person; check-in and check-out procedures; emergency release mechanism inside each chamber; and maximum time limits for work inside chambers without a warm-up break.
Confined Space in Cold Storage
Refrigeration vessels, evaporator chambers, and insulated rooms can constitute confined spaces. Confined space entry procedures, atmospheric testing requirements, and rescue procedures should be displayed at any cold storage location with confined space entry requirements.
