SAIL Internal Safety Standards
Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) has developed its own internal safety standards for its integrated steel plants, which are broadly aligned with the Factories Act, IS standards, and international steel industry practice. SAIL’s safety management system includes specific requirements for hazard communication at each process area, typically using IS 9457 colour-coded safety signs alongside process-specific procedure posters.
Carbon Monoxide Hazard Communication
Carbon monoxide (CO) is a colourless, odourless, and lethal gas produced in blast furnace operations, coke ovens, and other steel plant processes. CO hazard posters covering the locations where CO risk is present, the symptoms of CO exposure, and the emergency response procedure — including evacuation and the use of a self-contained breathing apparatus — are critical life-safety communications in steel plant environments.
