Hazardous Waste Handling — Signage Rules Under Environment Protection Act India

Hazardous waste management in India is regulated under the Hazardous and Other Wastes (Management and Transboundary Movement) Rules 2016, made under the Environment Protection Act 1986. These rules impose specific labelling, marking, and signage requirements on facilities that generate, store, transport, or dispose of hazardous waste.

Which Facilities Are Covered?

The Hazardous Waste Rules apply to facilities that generate hazardous waste in categories specified in the schedules to the rules — which covers a very wide range of industrial operations including chemical manufacturing, metal processing, pharmaceutical production, paint and coating manufacturing, battery manufacturing, and many others. If your facility generates industrial waste other than general solid waste, it is very likely covered.

Storage Area Signage Requirements

The Hazardous Waste Rules require that hazardous waste storage areas be clearly identified with signage specifying the area as a hazardous waste storage facility, the categories of waste stored, the emergency contact name and telephone number, and prohibition on entry to unauthorised persons. The storage area must be marked with a boundary and must have warning signs visible from outside the boundary.

Vehicle and Container Marking

Hazardous waste transport vehicles and containers must be marked with specific hazardous waste symbols and identification according to the rules. These markings are distinct from the safety posters in the facility itself but are part of the overall hazard communication system.

What Hindi Labels and Signs Add

Hazardous waste storage areas in Indian factories are often accessed by general workers, cleaning staff, and security personnel who are not trained hazardous waste handlers. Hindi warning signs and procedure notices at hazardous waste storage areas — covering no entry without authorisation, the nature of the hazard, and emergency contacts — are practical safety communication that reduces the risk of accidental exposure.
