IS 2551 is the Bureau of Indian Standards specification for danger notice plates used on electrical installations in India. These standardised warning signs on electrical equipment — switchboards, panels, distribution boards, and high-voltage installations — are a mandatory safety requirement in Indian industrial and commercial electrical systems and are closely associated with electrical safety compliance under the Factories Act and the Indian Electricity Rules 1956.
What IS 2551 Specifies
IS 2551 specifies the text, format, size, colour, and material requirements for danger notice plates placed on electrical equipment. The standard defines specific notice texts for different electrical hazard situations: “Danger — High Voltage” for equipment above specified voltages, “Do Not Switch On — Men at Work” for isolation lock-out situations, “Earth Before Touching” as a reminder of earthing procedure before working on isolated equipment, and “Do Not Operate” for machinery and plant isolation tags.
Where IS 2551 Plates Are Required
IS 2551 danger notice plates are required on all high-voltage switchgear and equipment where contact would be lethal, on distribution boards and control panels in industrial installations, at substation entries and electrical room entrances, and on locked-out equipment during maintenance to prevent accidental re-energisation.
IS 2551 and Lockout Tagout
While IS 2551 predates modern LOTO practice, the “Do Not Operate” and “Do Not Switch On” plate formats directly complement a LOTO programme. In Indian factories where formal LOTO tags are in use alongside IS 2551 plates, the two systems work together — the IS 2551 plate is the permanent warning at the equipment, and the LOTO tag is the temporary personal lock placed during specific maintenance activities.
Safety Posters Supporting IS 2551 Compliance
Safety awareness posters explaining the meaning of IS 2551 danger notice plates — what “Earth Before Touching” means, why “Do Not Switch On” notices must be respected absolutely — reinforce the effectiveness of the physical notices on the equipment.
